Did you know that the battery of a hybrid car can regenerate its own energy?

Hybrid cars combine two propulsion systems or motors, using the combustion engine as a main engine and the electric motor as a generator that recharges the car’s battery, thus minimising fuel consumption and saving energy.

Hybrid cars can use one engine or motor at a time, or both simultaneously in order to drive faster.

On the market, it is possible to find conventional and plug-in hybrid cars. Both types work with a combustion engine. Conventional hybrid cars can only use the electric motor for very short distances (2 or 3 kilometres) while travelling at low speeds.

The battery of plug-in hybrid cars, in addition to being internally recharged by the car’s own engine, can also be recharged by connecting the vehicle to slow charging points. Plug-in hybrids are more powerful cars that are perfect for getting around the city. These vehicles can cover long distances (40-50 kilometres) with the electric motor alone.

How do they generate power to recharge the battery?

The batteries of hybrid cars are recharged by the electric motor. This acts as a generator, and is activated by decelerations, regenerative braking and the combustion engine itself.

When braking and releasing the accelerator pedal, hybrid cars recover power, using the kinetic energy of the rotating wheels while the car slows down. The kinetic energy that is generated while braking is transformed into electric energy by the generator, with this being stored in the battery. This energy will then be used to start the car and travel at low speeds without needing to use the combustion engine, thus reducing fuel consumption. The following article explains regenerative braking in greater detail.

When travelling at a constant speed or when the battery is out of power, hybrid cars use the energy generated by the combustion engine to recharge their batteries. It is at these times when the electric generator is powered, recovering the electricity that it sends to the battery.

When hybrid cars come to a complete stop, the combustion engine and electric motor are turned off and the battery power is used to operate other components of the vehicle.

Advantages of hybrid cars

Driving vehicles which pollute less has more advantages over other vehicles, and hybrid cars, in addition to using less fuel and causing less pollution, generate their own energy that can be used to charge their battery.

For the charging of plug-in hybrid cars, the Endolla service recommends normal charging connectors and also provides normal charging points around the BSM car parking network. Furthermore, these types of connectors are recommended for the safety and protection of EV batteries, as they are better adapted to the power that these vehicles can withstand.
